Inside a Washing Machine

Dirty clothes go in and come out clean. For the average person that’s enough, but for the curious few what happens in between? We broke it down in this post.

Who Invented the Washing Machine?

The practice of washing clothes has always been around. In ancient times, people used rocks and sand to help with handwashing items. Invented by Alva J. Fisher in 1908, the first electric washing machine revolutionized households.

Advantages of Washing Machine

time ticking

Time is the most precious resource. When the washing machine was first invented, although not mechanically perfect, it saved people a tremendous amount of time. Instead of manually washing clothes, washing machines allowed people to do other things while their clothes were being cleaned.

Another impact washing machines have had is in extending clothing life-span. By using different cycle customizations – delicate, heavy, cold or warm – users are able to get deeper cleans while maintaining the material.

It’s truly hard to grasp the net impact that washing machines have had on our everyday lives.

How Does a Washing Machine Work?

complicated machine

So what’s happening behind the curtain? Inside a washing machine, there are three primary parts – the inner drum, the outer drum, and the paddles – sometimes referred to as agitators.

The Inner drum is what you see inside. This part holds your clothes and filters water in and out. As the inner drum fills with water and spins, the outer drum is stationary and keeps the water from spilling.

The outer drum also controls the temperature. There’s a thermostat in the outer drum that monitors this. There are also three attached pipes – one for hot water, one for cold water and one for dirty water. Together, all three pipes control the temperature and water level of the inner drum.

The last part of the washing machine is the paddles or agitators. These, as you can guess, move your clothes while the inner drum spins.

Types of Washing Machine

two washing machines

There are three primary types of washing machines. Once you understand the difference, it’s simple to tell them apart. The three types are – Top Load Agitators, Top Load Impellers, and Front Loaders.

Top Load Agitator

Top Load Agitators are older machines, they’ve been around for 60+ years. Although reliable, they typically use three times the water and energy than modern machines. Top Load Agitators are the least environmentally friendly and will increase your water and energy bills.

Top Load Impeller

Also known as high efficiency (HE) washers, these are the most modern washing machines. These use an impeller at the bottom to move clothes. For efficiency, you can turn HE on for larger loads.

Front Load

Instead of using agitators to help move around clothes, Front Load Machines depend on clothes rubbing against each other naturally. This method is easier on clothes and extends their life span. Front Loaders work well with large loads

Fun fact! In general, you’ll see more front-load machines in Europe and top-load machines in the States.

Wrap up

As mentioned, there are three types of washing machines and three primary parts. Once you know the basics of how each one works, washing gets a lot more simple.

The washing machine undoubtedly saves us all much-needed time. That said, in today’s fast-paced world even that may not be enough. If you find yourself needing a little more time on your hands, consider hiring a laundry pickup and delivery service like Laundry Butler for You. They pick up your clothes and return them the next day clean and folded. One less chore off your list means that much more free time to do whatever you want. Laundry Detergent Guide for Any Situation

There are many options when it comes to laundry detergent. Tide, Persil, Seventh Generation, Gain and more are constantly on the move to make a better detergent. Some specializing in stains, preserving color, for travel, and odors. With all the options, finding the best isn’t easy.

To skip the research and digging, here are the most recommended detergents for any situation. The best laundry detergents for colors, odors, stains, and best travel size options. Save yourself time and find your go-to laundry detergent here.

Best Green Laundry Detergent

Seventh Generation Laundry Detergent

Seventh Generation Free & Clear Laundry Detergent

Seventh Generation is a notable figure in the laundry detergent business. Not only do their products reflect this but also their brand. 97% of ingredients inside their bottles are organic and the bottle itself is made of 80% recycled plastic. The company is partnered with Rainforest Alliance and The Forest Stewardship Council. Seventh Generation Free & Clear is one of the best green detergents.

Best Laundry Detergent for Odors

Tide Sport Laundry Detergent

Tide Plus Febreze Fresh Sports Odor Defense Liquid Laundry Detergent

Tide, arguably, has some of the best laundry detergents. They’re consistently beating competitors and have strong customer loyalty. For odor, Tide’s Plus Febreze Fresh Sports Odor Defense is a great choice. It uses the same formula as Tide Original but with an additional odor-fighting element. If you’re not a fan of scented fragrances we don’t recommend this.

Best Laundry Detergent for Stains

Tide Ultra Plus Laundry Detergent

Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release HE Turbo Clean Laundry Detergent

Tide Plus Ultra Stain Release HE Turbo Clean Laundry Detergent besides having a long name, uses the original Tide scent with a powerful stain removal formula. The bottle even has a scrubber built into the cap for pre-treating stains. Tide boasts it has six times the stain-fighting power than other detergents.

Best Laundry Detergent for Preserving Colors

Woolite Laundry Detergent

Woolite Dark Liquid Detergent

Woolite is one of the best for preserving colors. Their “Color Renew” technology prevents fading while smoothing material fibers. The cleaning “formula” used helps catch loose dye particles, stopping them from migrating.

It also does a great job balancing deep cleans and preserving materials. One bottle of this Woolite Dark Liquid Detergent washes 33 loads of laundry.

Travel Size Laundry Detergent

Travel costs can add up quickly. From finding a place to stay, the constant eating out, and tourist attraction fees, the costs can start to pile up. Don’t let costs spiral out of control. Hotels can be pricey when it comes to laundry. Bringing travel size laundry detergents, and going the self-service route is a quick and easy option for staying on budget while on your next adventure.

Forever New Powder – Travel Size, is a great option. You can get at least 20 washes out of this little travel size bottle and can clean clothes practically anywhere.

Another option is Tide Travel Sink Packets. These are unscented and tightly sealed so they won’t break. These packets contain an anti-lift formula to help lift stains without difficulty.

Both options are great substitutes to avoid overpaying for laundry services while traveling.

Worst Laundry Detergent

Oxi Clean Extra Laundry Detergent

Extra Plus OxiClean Laundry Detergent

Extra Plus OxiClean is one of the cheapest detergents. In this case both in cost and quality. From a Consumer Reports piece – “[This detergent is] barely better than water for removing most stains”. Good luck with tough stains and odors.

Sun Triple Clean Laundry Detergent

Sun Triple Clean Laundry Detergent

Sun Triple Clean Laundry detergent is another cheap option. It’s poor at removing dirt and stains. We recommend avoiding these.

Wrapping Up

There you have it – the best laundry detergents for any situation. Finding the right one is like finding the right pair of jeans, it takes trying on a couple of pairs, but when you find it you know. Find out what you like and you’re set.

Not looking forward to the next laundry day? You can always try a laundry pick up and delivery service like Laundry Butler for You, which picks up your dirty clothes and returns them the next day to your door clean and folded. Fill out the form, choose the detergent that suits your needs and you’re on your way. The future of laundry looks good.

How to Sort Laundry

Is Sorting Laundry Necessary?

There are two types of people. Those who sort their clothes and those who toss everything in the wash all at once. It’s easy to be the latter, especially if it’s you who’s stuck doing the laundry. But taking that extra step will not only extend the life of your wardrobe but also save you valuable time.

Healthy habits build. When you start organizing your laundry and building systems you’ll find yourself looking for other chores you can systematize. Next thing you know you’ll be finding ways to more efficiently wash the dishes or clean your room faster. These little hacks compound and can have a powerful effect – saving you a lot of time.

The aim isn’t to organize for the sake of organizing. The aim is to build better systems in your life so you can free up time doing chores and start doing things you want to do. Now let’s get into the specifics.

How to Sort Laundry by Color

Most washing machines today are able to prevent your whites and colors from mixing. To stay on the safe side, it’s best to follow a simple rule – separate your whites clothes from the colored ones.

A hand full of other useful tips :

  • Turn your jeans inside out while washing. This will prevent the outside colors from rubbing off.
  • Be careful with new clothes as these will bleed the most
  • Red and blue colors tend to transfer to other fabrics most

Separating your clothes by color is an easy step that will extend the lifetime of your wardrobe.

How to Sort Laundry by Fabric

More importantly than sorting by color is sorting by fabric. Modern washing machines haven’t yet solved the issue of mixing different types of clothes. The main fabrics or categories to separate are:

  • Delicates (silk clothes, satin sheet, lingerie, etc…)
  • Towels
  • Denim and jeans
  • Baby clothes
  • The rest (cotton, blends, other)

Don’t risk ruining your favorite outfit. Spend a little extra time and your clothes will thank you.

Best Way to Sort Laundry

sort laundry by color

The best way to sort your laundry is to separate each task into buckets – do whites and darks, sort by fabrics, fold all shirts at once, and fold all the pants at the same time

When you separate each task into a separate entity you allow yourself time to get into a flow state. Flow state is a meditative state where you’re not thinking, just doing. This helps create momentum, making the task easier and time pass faster.

Wrap Up

Sorting is essential. Technology has yet to make a self-cleaning, stain-free fabric – so until then, we’re all stuck doing laundry.

Better yet. If you can’t wait for a self-cleaning fabric, you can always outsource your laundry to laundry pick up and delivery services, like Laundry Butler for You. To start, simply schedule your pickup through the website or mobile app, and have your clothes cleaned and delivered back to you the following day.

Laundry Statistics

The average household washes 50 pounds of laundry a week and 6,000 articles of clothing every year!

Laundry is something we don’t always think about. It’s a bit like cleaning the dishes or brushing our teeth. An everyday habit we grow accustomed to. That said, some of the data on how often people wash their clothes is truly thought provoking.

How much laundry does the average person do? Mulberry’s Garment Care had the same question and conducted a survey asking a little over 1,000 Americans about their personal laundry habits.

Some of the findings were understandable, but others were quite shocking. One of the most unexpected findings from the study was that not everyone cleans their underwear. From those surveyed, 20% of men and 10% of women don’t clean their underwear, at all.

That would mean 2 out of every 10 of your male friends and 1 out of every 10 of your female friends don’t clean their underwear. Now, these results could definitely be fudged – just a bunch of students being funny; at least, we hope.

Other interesting findings featured in the study:

how old where you when you started doing your own laundry
  • Women start to clean their laundry at an earlier age than men
much much do you spend per month on dry cleaning
  • Most people spend less than $50 on dry cleaning per month
  • A fraction spend up to $150 per month
how often do you wash your jeans
  • Most men and women clean their jeans after 1 to 2 wears

For more information on individual demographics see below:

College Students

It often becomes necessary for freshmen transitioning to a new school to build clean habits and laundry systems of their own.

The average student washes their laundry once every other week. Now it depends on how many clothes each student may have. The more clothes could mean longer waits between laundry days, but students should try to not go too long between washes. There’s always likely to be that one person on your floor that seems to never clean their clothes, which is likely to not go down too well with roommates.

Young Professionals

The average young professional does laundry once a week. At this stage of life, laundry day is often allocated to a specific day and becomes routine.

Keeping this system running smoothly is essential for young professionals. For people starting new careers and jobs, staying on top of their personal hygiene is important. It shows the world you take yourself seriously, and in turn, that others should take you seriously as well.

Having a laundry pickup service come once a week on a recurring basis can be helpful for young professionals, becoming a convenient new system in their routine. Saving precious time and energy. If you’re someone who values your time, this can be a great investment.

Families with Kids

Families, of course, are going to be doing laundry more than most. Young children aren’t doing their own laundry just yet. So, it falls to parents to take up the load – or loads. The average family does their laundry once a week. Depending on the family size, this can take anywhere between 2 to 5 hours.

For a family with pets, doing the laundry can take much longer. Is it worth it? Of course! Pets are a blessing.

Wrapping Up

Everyone does laundry. Apparently, some don’t clean their underwear, but that’s a personal choice. If you’re tired of washing 6,000 articles of clothing every year, you can always try a laundry pickup and delivery service. So you can turn “laundry day” into “do what you want day”.

Off to College Care Package

off to college

Whether the care package is for your son, daughter, or a friend; get something you know they’ll like. Having a hard time finding that special something? Think back, what was the last gift they gave you? Or, what do they usually gift?

Was it a book? A piece of art? A gift card to a fun store? Clothes? Usually, people gift things they enjoy. If you can give something they gift, then you’re on the right track.

If this isn’t helpful, then stick with what you like. What’s the last product or service purchase you made that you really enjoy? If you like it, then it’s likely someone else will too.

If you’re still stuck, a great gift that never fails is free time. Laundry or cleaning services, like Laundry Butler for You are a great option; and take one thing off busy student’s to-do lists. Providing laundry pick up and delivery, weekly or by request; subscriber’s clothes come back clean and ready to be placed in drawers or hung in their closets. Best part? They’ll have more time for meeting people and learning. Follow this link and type in their zip code to see if the service delivers to their location.

  • Fitbit flex band
  • Athletic hat or headband
  • Pull up bar
  • Athletic socks
  • Apple Air-pods
  • Running shoes
  • Biking helmet
  • Athletic sunglasses

If all else fails, a good default is a water bottle. It’s always nice to have a backup.

Healthy College Care Package Ideas

healthy college care package

Is your friend or kid a health nut? You have options.

You could get them a gift card to their favorite grocery store. A box of their favorite snacks. Books on food nutrition.

Another cool option, you could get them a subscription to organic meal prep delivery. Sign them up and they will deliver organic food to their doorstep weekly or by request.

How about that first cup of coffee in the morning? Or tea, or water, or juice, or what have you that starts your day. Because waking up is hard to do and having a moment to yourself is an important way to ease into the day. It’s a beautiful thing. So simple and satisfying. Pair that with the perfect bagel or Danish hot off the deli assembly line and you’ve got a little bit of magic brewing.

That’s when you can focus on the day ahead. Might be that you have a long I-Don’t-Want-To-Do-It list or it’s a day fraught with challenges that you left waiting from yesterday. But it’s also an opportunity to meet the world head on and kick it’s proverbial bumby and get a jump on it!

So, as they say in yoga and meditation classes, set an intention for your day and look for the goodness in the small things. Like breaking your fast with your favorite beverage and perhaps a treat. A little treat, a little pampering is well deserved. Taking a moment and starting the day with something you enjoy.

Just like in school when you were tackling projects, it helps to break things down into manageable, bite size pieces. One step at a time, one foot in front of the other, and then before you know it the miles are piling up and you’ve accomplished exactly what you set out to do.  Don’t you just love the feeling of getting chores done and then having time to do exactly what you want to do? We all do. And sometimes, that requires a little help.

Remember you aren’t alone. You’ve got Laundry Butler for You pick up and delivery laundry service on your team. Just the thought of it puts a brighter gleam in your eye. So get out there and make it happen!

Summer Vacation. Are there two more glorious words out there? What’s better than not having than three months of not having to pack lunches, clean uniforms, monitor homework, or worry about taxiing your kids to the next event?

The summertime is lovely. Finally, the weather is warm enough to keep everyone healthy, the food is tasty, and if your kids get restless, you can just send them outside for an hour or so.

Regardless of the lemonade, free-time, pool parties and all-you-can-eat barbeques, summer has the ability to drive any parent crazy. All that free time can get the best of even the most well-intentioned family. Below, we’ve come up with some ideas to help keep your family functioning as a unit. Let Summer 2018 be the best one yet!!

  • Plan an Actual Vacation: You’ll probably spend the majority of your summer taking care of things around the house, but planning to go out of town is often the only way for families to devote their undivided attention on one another. Whether you’re heading to your favorite campsite, Grandma’s house, the beaches of Hawaii, or Paris, you’ll be excited to not have to worry about real life for a few days.
  • Keep Using a Calendar: Time is short, but the activities and responsibilities still run high. Having a calendar or schedule on your fridge or mud-room wall will help keep everyone on the same page. Bonus Tip: have each family member use a different colored pen or marker.
  • Remember to Relax: Let yourself and your family sleep in, spend time outside, go swimming, or just enjoy the warm weather. The summer months are the perfect time to take a moment and catch up on all the things that make us successful, most importantly, sleep.
  • Keep Everything in Order: Whether you’re on the go, or taking the time to relax, it’s a great idea to keep your house orderly and clean. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself in a more chaotic situation when it’s time to send everyone back to school. Now is the perfect time to outsource more chores so that you can also take a break, don’t forget – it’s not just about the kids! Outsource your meal prep, laundry, and other household care, and you’ll be in for a treat!
  • Take Pictures: Summer is usually when everyone is the most well-rested and relaxed. Be sure to snap a few candids! You’ll love those messy popsicle and backyard barbeque photos for years to come.

Did we miss anything? What are you most looking forward to this summer?

When you hear the word “currency” what do you immediately picture? You’re probably thinking a nice, crisp, green dollar bill. For us, currency means money. Money is the means by which we survive. How we pay the bills, how we arrange our futures, and how we express ourselves through material objects. Most countries only have one recognized form of currency. However, there are 3 other “currencies” we’d like you to consider, time, enjoyment, and fulfillment.

  1. Time: This is perhaps the most practical of the three. Time often goes hand in hand with money, but generally in the number of hours worked versus the number of hours spent in leisure. Without getting too morbidly philosophical, none of us really know how much time we have left. Now, there’s not a lot you can do other than live your life to the fullest, and often that means working a bit. Now if you have a job you love, why not also have a life you love? A life you love probably doesn’t even consider chores. So why not have all your chores, like grocery shopping and laundry, outsourced?
  2. Enjoyment: This goes hand in hand with the idea of not doing your own chores anymore. How much enjoyment are you getting paid each week? Is it above or below the national industry standard? Of course, this is a somewhat impossible question to answer accurately, but enjoying life, finding happiness in the things and activities you love should be a part of your virtual paycheck.
  3. Fulfillment: Is your day to day life meaningful? Do you feel that you are serving a greater purpose in your daily activities? Of course, someone has to crunch the numbers, but are you able to also give back to your community, or spend enough time with your kids? We often work over 40 hours a week, but to what end? Some might be perfectly satisfied with the life they’re living, can you say the same?

What are some other abstract resources you find important?

It’s February, the month of love and cheap heart boxes of bad chocolate and wilted roses. Despite the commerciality of this time of year, each of is still touched by the gifts we receive, cheesy though they very well may be, whether it’s a chicken-scratched paper Valentine from our children or a last minute bouquet of white carnations with the grocery store sticker still on them. We put a lot of focus on love in February, but what about the rest of the year? Of course, we love others, but what about loving ourselves? Loving yourself isn’t egotistical. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Loving yourself is accepting the fact that you have limitations and needs. Most adults in this world have far too much on their plates. Below, we’ve listed three easy things to keep in mind so that you can be your healthiest and happiest self all year long.

1. Know When You Have Too Much On Your Plate: Every adult works at least 40 hours a week, but in spite of that, we just pile on the tasks and commitments. Maybe you don’t really have time to be in charge of carpooling for your child’s school’s drama competition. Maybe store bought cookies are just fine for the bake sale. There are only 24 hours in a day. Life is unpredictable enough, don’t be afraid to remove some of those tasks that eat up your time.
2. Reassess What You Truly Want Out Of Life: Well, everyone has to analyze spreadsheets at some point in their life, but is folding piles of laundry really worth hours upon hours of your life?
3. Ask For Help When You Need It: There is absolutely nothing wrong in asking for help. We’re all human, some weeks we’re more superhuman than usual, but for the most part, our Batmobile is just a minivan. Help comes in many forms. Maybe it’s an after-school babysitter for your toddler or hiring Laundry Butler for You to take care of your laundry. Whatever you need help with, there’s most likely a solution. A great place to look for help is Care.com. They have listings for child care, house care, and even odd jobs.

Was this list helpful? What are some of your methods for helping your self?

Can you believe it’s already 2018? It seems like the 2017 Ball dropped just yesterday! The New Year brings a lot of opportunities for growth and success, but at a time when resolutions can be extremely overhyped, it can be hard to come up with a practical plan of action. Below we’ve come up with a list of some easy ways to make 2018 the best year yet!

  1. Make a list of five reasonable things you want to accomplish

Maybe you want to read 5 books before June or your want to walk an extra mile everyday, whatever it is that you want to change in your life, make a list. Start small, but dream big!

  1. Plan and Set Yourself Up for Success:

One of the best ways to actually ensure change is to set yourself up for success. Maybe that means re-organizing your home or work space, or hiring extra help where you need it. Take a day and sit down to plan out your ideal menus, make sure you have all the right tools, from labels to lunch containers, and make a plan. Ultimately, do your best to stick to your plan, even if you use it as a loose guideline.

  1. Keep the Necessities

You’re leading a busy life, you don’t have time for things that don’t truly matter. If you’re not passionate about cooking, don’t waste time with meal prep, sign up with companies like Blue Apron for a more efficient but perfectly healthy meal option. You might also appreciate cutting out excess chores, especially laundry as this can be a major time taker. If you’re around

  1. Get Enough Sleep and Eat Well:

Get those eight hours in! Sleep is just as important as exercise, but is often one of the areas we skimp on. Eating well can also be a challenge, especially if you’re constantly out on the run. Conquering both getting enough sleep and eating well can be challenging, but that’s where planning comes in. Sure, life throws curve balls, but if you have a guideline to refer to, you’ll feel a lot more secure.

  1. Focus on Others:

Sometimes we focus so much on living the best life possible that we forget to think about those around us. We are not here just for ourselves. While achieving our own goals is essential to a happy life, it can be abundantly rewarding to help others. This could be volunteering for your local homeless shelter, or it could be making a pan of brownies for your next door neighbor.

Ultimately, the best way to accomplish anything personal is to use a method that works best for you! Don’t worry about all the latest and greatest trends and journaling techniques. Take a moment, and reflect on what you need to succeed and take action! The last thing you want is to be feeling like you didn’t live up to your full potential on New Year’s Eve 2019.
